What does this objective mean?

The goal for any educator is to be able to thoroughly articulate the subject and content of a lesson or unit plan. If teachers are able to successfully convey ideas and subject matter than they are doing their job as a teacher to impart knowledge on the students. Covering the details as well as the major concepts of Health and Physical Education are very important especially since both of these subjects cover vital lessons that are applicable to everyday life.

Some examples of concepts within the major discipline for Health Physical Education are:

Loco-motor and Manipulative Skills within the Movement Wheel. These are applied though subjects such as Team Sports, Individual Sports, Fitness Units, and Rhythms and Dancing.

Concepts such as Teamwork, Cooperation, and Problem Solving are worked into our curriculum through Initiative Games, Team Sports, and Icebreakers.

Health Related Fitness Concepts are applied through Fitness Units as well as any subjects related to Sports and Recreation and Leisure Activities.

In Health Class there are 8 Components of School Health. These concepts include: Health Education, Physical Education, Nutrition, Health Services, Counseling, Psychological and Social Services, Healthy School Environment, Family and Community Involvement, and School-Site Health Promotion.

There are also Key Health Instructional Topics; including Mental and Emotional Health, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Intentional and Unintentional Injuries, Tobacco, Drugs and Alcohol, Sexual Health, Personal Health and Wellness, and Violence Prevention.

Why is this objective important to teachers?

Being able to describe the concepts within the major discipline is extremely importance because that is how you are to keep the children aware of what they are learning and why. Discussing how the material is important and why it is important that they learn it is just as big of a part in teaching as discussing the concepts themselves.

It is my job as a Health and Physical Educator to effectively communicate important concepts within my major discipline in order for the students to understand why my class is important and how it is applicable to daily life and pursuing an active lifestyle. Teaching concepts such as the 5 components of health related fitness, and personal and community health is crucial to teaching children about Health and Physical Education. Covering mental health, family life, relationships, and sexual education are necessary to cover in health in order to provide knowledge, coping tools, and strategies to use in different situations that may arise or different times in your life. If the students do not understand the more broad, base-level concepts that we work off of then how are they able to grow as individuals and apply such important concepts to their everyday lives?
