What does this objective mean?

 

Constructivist theory focuses on the idea in which students use and build upon their prior knowledge to construct new knowledge. Learning is an active process by which students construct new knowledge instead of acquiring new knowledge. Constructivist theory is the idea that individuals construct their understanding through experience and reflection. In the classroom setting this is applicable to the concept of building off of a student’s prior knowledge. 

Constructivist teaching means that the teacher is articulating their instruction in such a way that students will be able to relate new concepts to past information and apply it to real world scenarios.

 

 

Why is this objective important to teachers?

 

As an educator relating information to a student’s prior knowledge is one of the best things that you can do. Prior knowledge is a wonderfully useful tool that helps students relate new concepts to previous experience. This allows for students to retain the new information is a unique way; creating further academic success and personal growth.
