TESL-220: Teaching English as a Second Language

After completing the TESL course this semester it is easy to discuss the importance of cultural perspective and how it relates to teaching. In class we have studied just how important it is to accept and recognize different cultures. Perhaps one of the best ways to create a positive, comfortable learning environment for culturally and linguistically diverse students is to recognize the variety of different cultures in the classroom and incorporate that relation into your lesson plans. By doing so you can improve the engagement of your students, incorporate prior knowledge, and help them learn and make more connections in a more simplistic, relatable, teaching method. If, as a teacher, you fail to recognize and accept the cultures of your students then you are creating a close-viewed classroom setting which will not do anything for your students. Having a positive cultural perspective will ultimately be very beneficial when teaching in any setting.

In class we created an Instructional Resource Guide in which we had to teach a lesson that accommodated to children that were culturally and linguistically diverse. I decided to cover a lesson on Soccer since it is an internationally recognized sport that is more times than not relatable due to its fame. In this lesson it was important to relate the cultural backgrounds of both the sport and the English Language Learners in order to allow them to make connections and enhance learning.
