2.1 Design instruction based on elements key to effective teaching.

What does this objective mean?

The official Roanoke College lesson plan outlines elements of effective teaching as: Introduction, Body (Direct Teaching), Closure (Summary), Homework, and Assessment. Along with these elements, it is also important to include differentiation of content, process, and product based on students' abilities, learning modalities, and styles. A lesson combining all of these components will likely to have the most success, because it balances the process of directly teaching with independent student work, and makes allowances for those who need differentiated instruction.

Why is this objective important for teachers?

Lesson design and implementation is at the heart of teaching with a purpose. The best lessons are planned by teachers ahead of time, with some room for flexibility, along the guidelines outlined above. It is important for teachers to understand each of these key elements, so he or she can progress through the lesson with the knowledge the instruction is complete, guided by objectives, and comprehendible. For example, without an introduction to give meaning to the lesson, students would not necessarily understand why they are learning the information, and without the assessment component at the end, the teacher would not necessarily know for sure they were grasping the material. By designing lessons with all of the key components, teachers will ensure their time in the classroom is spent most effectively.
