Time Trials

After weeks, actually a couple of months, of working out on the track and in the weight room today was the day. Time trials. Now you may be asking yourself, "What is time trials exactly?" Well let me tell you, it is basically tryouts, in a sense, for track. It is the best way for a coach to evaluate his runners, and set marks for them. It is also a good way for a coach to see who is out of shape, or not good enough to run at meets, or even worse on the team.

Like most of the runners on the team we've been hurting a bit, after a couple weeks of tough practices that consisted of sprints at around 85-90 percent of our race pace, and plyometrics. So you can say we were not all not really amped up to run at race pace; this is especially true for me since my hamstring on my left leg has been a little messed up. So not only was I worried about making the cut, but I was freaking out because my hamstring was strained pretty bad, and I've have a bad history with hamstring injuries in high school. But nontheless I had to just hope for the best.

It was a brisk Saturday morning, and there was a slight breeze in the air yet the sun was gleeming. We all came to the track at around 9AM and began our stretches, and rolled out any tight muscles. As we were getting prepped the baseball team came onto and started doing workouts, so instead of started to run at around 9:30 we had to wait till 10:30 to actually start doing all of our warm-up workouts because the baseball team were doing 900's with the local marine corps. So once they finished their workouts on the track we got started. The girls ran first, while we did dynamic stretches. Once the last heat of girls finished of girls finished their 150, I started to spike up and get prepared for the 300, which is one of the weirdest races to run because you can't really pace yourself. And being someone who is used to running a specific pace for 800's, it was going to be quite an adjustment for me.

We headed to the line, the entire track was silent, my spikes were already digging in the track, and then all I heard was,"On your mark, get set, go!" We were off and I felt pretty good, I was leading the pack heading into the straightaway but then 2 of my teammates pull up on me around 180 meters, and then one more got me around 245 meters into the race, but I wasn't last. I just tried to stick with my other teammate until we got to the line. And then before I knew the race was over. I just stood around for a bit trying to catch my breath, until our coach came up to us and told us our times, whether we made it, and his 400 meter time projections. I made it, and he projected me to run a in my 53 400 meter after adding 12 sec to my 300 meter time.

It felt great to know that I accomplished this, but now there is alot more work to be put in before our 1st meet, which is in Dec, but I'm up for the challenge.
